Summary: Abstract
Considering the microalgae farming and the productivity efficiency regarding
biomass, it’s important to seek for alternatives aiming to reduce production
costs in order to produce bio-compounds for the biofuels market. This paper
aimed to ally the reuse of residues as a source of nutrients for the tillage of the
microalga Klebsormidium flaccidum as an alternative to the biofuels production
chain. Therefore, vinasse was used which is the wastewater from the
sugarcane destilation process. The experiments were carried out in the
cultivation room in the Laboratory of Taxonomy and Ecology of Continental
Algae - LATEAC of the Federal University of Espirito Santo (UFES). Some
analyzes were carried out to monitor the development and growth of the
cultivated strain in 3 different concentrations of raw vinasse 10, 20 and 30%
diluted in distilled water. Regarding cell density it was possibe to observe the
best results in the treatments with 20% and the biomass obtained significant
results at 20 and 30% dilution. Regarding the biochemical characterization of
the biomass and the accumulation of biocomposites, the results showed over
60% in the accumulation of carbohydrates in the cultures with 10% vinasse,
suggesting the possibility of use in the production of bioethanol. The percentage
of removal parameters, such as BOD, nitrogen content and phosphorus,
demonstrated that the microalgae K. flaccidum farming in vinasse may be a
cheaper and more sustainable alternative over the residue use.
