Summary: The phenological development of cultivated species has a number of implications in
physiology, and consequently in the productivity and quality of its fruits. In the
papaya, despite the overlap between the vegetative and reproductive period, in the
transition of these periods, there are significant changes in the allocation pattern of
the resources from the photosynthetic process. Therefore, the objective of this work
was to investigate the differential responses in the photosynthetic performance of
two cultivars of papaya (Carica papaya L.) during the vegetative period and the
reproductive period. The work was carried out in the commercial production area of
Caliman Agrícola S / A, in the Fazenda Santa Terezinha, in the municipality of
Linhares, State of Espírito Santo. The evaluated cultivars were Calimosa and
Aliança. The evaluations were carried out on a monthly basis, starting in October
2017 and ending in June 2018. It was taken as a vegetative period from the first
measurement, when the plants had only ten days of planting until the appearance
of the first open flower in less than 50% of the evaluated population, and the
reproductive period (when more than 50% of the population evaluated had an open
flower). The results showed that papaya cultivars had different physiological
behaviors between the vegetative and reproductive periods. The cv. Calimosa, in
the reproductive period, had a significant reduction in the photochemical activity of
photosynthesis, in the parameters ABS/CS0, TR0/CS0, ET0/CS0, RE0/CS0, DI0/CS0
and Pitotal. In the cv. Alliance, during the reproductive period, there was a significant
reduction of ABS/CS0, TR0/CS0, ET0/CS0, RE0/CS0 and PIabs, while DI0/CS0 and
PItotal did not differ. As for the biochemical efficiency of photosynthesis, cv. Calimosa,
in the reproductive period, had a significant reduction of A, A/gs, A/E and A/Ci. In
the cv. Alliance, during the reproductive period, there was only a significant increase
in E. In relation to the chlorophyll index, it was observed that cv. Calimosa is 7.6%
that cv. Alliance. Through these results, it is possible to suggest that, in the
reproductive period, cv. Calimosa had a reduction of its photosynthetic performance,
while in cv. Alliance, there was no change.
