Summary: Considering the need to increase knowledge on the best conditions for
reforestation with native species and on the quality of the wood used in the
manufacture of violin arches, this work aimed to evaluate the photosynthesis
and size of the carbon reservoirs of three morphotypes of Paubrasilia echinata
Lam. in the juvenile and adult phases, under high and low irradiance. Two
experiments were carried out: the first one analyzed photosynthetic data and
composition of the cell wall of juvenile plants of Pau-brasil, exposed to two
artificially light conditions, in a greenhouse at UFES, in Vitória - ES; In the
second experiment, Brazilian plants, planted in natural shade and in full
sunlight, in the experimental area of the Marco Raposo Bows Institute in
Domingos Martins - ES were collected to analyze the composition of the cell
wall and the accumulation of non-structural carbohydrates , after the
measurements of photosynthesis were carried out. The data of CO2
assimilation, stomatal conductance, transpiration and water use efficiency
showed in both experiments a better photosynthetic performance of the small
morphotype under shading and medium and large morphotypes under full sun.
In the second experiment, the highest levels of lignin were observed in the cell
wall of the stems and leaves of the three morphotypes when at full sun, and a
possible positive correlation between the accumulation of sucrose and
hemicelluloses. These results are of great importance for a better
understanding of Brazil's ecophysiological behavior, aiming at its preservation,
use in reforestation and the success of the violin manufacturing industry.
